Why do Dancers Come to NYC?

Make it in New York, and you can make it anywhere. But why try to make it in New York in the first place?

Dancers flock from all over the world to live in New York. With the increasing cost of rent and the incredible competition in the industry, what’s the point of coming to New York?

New York has a lot to offer performing artists; from auditions, training, gigs, and the overwhelming sense of community, the NYC arts community has it all. If you want to learn more about why dancers come to NYC and where to find NYC dancers to hire for events, keep reading!

Auditions Happen Everyday

Thousands of auditions happen each year in NYC. Broadway shows, modern companies, and commercial gigs all have auditions in the Big Apple. Even regional theatres outside of NYC have auditions in NYC because of the impressive pool of talent.

Though a lot of shows currently have a self-tape and virtual audition process, callbacks still occur in the city. To avoid spending time and money traveling across country for potential callbacks, dancers live in NYC.

Even when a dancer is on a contract or performing in a show, they’re probably still auditioning for the next thing. If they were to live in the suburbs, auditions may be weeks in between. In New York, there’s bound to be a new project to go in for every week!

Dance Training is Convenient

Dancers are constantly training and aiming new skills. Popular dance studios in the city include Steps on Broadway, Broadway Dance Center, and Peridance. Outside of big cities like NYC and LA, it can be difficult to find dance classes to keep in shape. Not many cities have advanced adult drop-in dance classes, and for some dancers, it might mean rtaveling over an hour to get to class in their area.

While living in New York City, they have access to drop-in classes taught by world-known choreographers. By taking these classes, dancers can build connections with choreographers and directors that they want to work with eventually.

For dancers starting out in the city, there are plenty of training programs. These training program add a little bit more structure to a dancers’ life. Dancers can work closely with faculty and dive-in to their dance training.

Gigs and Other Work in The City

Sadly, not every professinal dancer can be #bookedandblessed all the time. Fortunately there are temporary gigs dancers can pick up every now and again in the city.

Dancers can find work dancing in commercial flashmobs in Times Square, as wedding dancers, party performers for hire, and as dancers in choreographer showcases.

The NYC Dance Community

Even though the dance community is large and growing, it is also so small. Everyone knows everyone. Friends in the community can help you get through tough times, like a not-so-perfect audition or a rejection email. Having friends how can relate to how you feel can help you bounce back. Additionally, since everyone knows everyone, it’s not uncommon that your friend who is close with a choreographer.
